‘There is a long standing history of horseback riding in and around Glacier Park. In fact, the first Park visitors arrived via the Great Northern Railroad and then spent days, and sometimes even weeks, touring the Park staying along the way at tent camps or backcountry chalets that were set approximately one day’s horseback ride apart from each other.

Swan Mountain Outfitters is honored to be carrying on a nearly century long tradition of trail riding in and around Glacier National Park. We don’t think there could be a better way to experience Glacier, so we invite you, your family and your friends to come and join us on a horseback adventure through this unspoiled and awe-inspiring national treasure.

We offer a variety of horseback services including:

The only trail rides inside Glacier Park and now in West Glacier!
Overnight horseback trips from our West Glacier Corral
Our Cowboy Cookout Ride – 3 hours of riding with a steak dinner
Full day and multi-day saddle paddle packages
Customized Glacier Park drop camp trips
Packing services into Glacier’s backcountry
Packing services to guests of Sperry Chalet and Granite Park Chalet
Our most popular offering is our trail ride where experienced wranglers guide you on horseback tours ranging from one hour to a full day in length. We offer these trail rides from four stunning locations:

Apgar Corral – near the main entrance on the west side
Lake McDonald Corral – across the road from Lake McDonald Lodge
Many Glacier Corral – across from Many Glacier Hotel on the east side
West Glacier Corral – behind the Glacier Rawhide Trading Post, about 2 miles from the West Entrance to Glacier National Park
We can accommodate riders of all skill levels. The horses are gentle and our staff is friendly and ready to meet you. Let us help you make your Glacier vacation an experience to remember for years to come!’

Here at the Historic Tamarack Lodge and Cabins, we are proud to include ourselves in the Peace Pole Project. A Peace Pole is a handcrafted monument displaying the message ’May Peace Prevail On Earth’ in a variety of different languages.

From its beginnings in 1955 Japan, Masahisa Goi dedicated his life to spreading the message conveyed on the peace poles and today there are tens of thousands of poles in more than 180 countries throughout the world. There are peace poles located at the Pyramids of Giza, at the magnetic North Pole and at Hiroshima, Japan.

The peace pole at the Historic Tamarack Lodge and Cabins was inaugurated in September 2010 in recognition of the 100 year anniversary of Glacier National Park which is also celebrated as the Waterton-Glacier International Peace Park.

‘The high mountain peaks of Montana’s Glacier Country accumulate large amounts of snow each winter, which supply an abundance of water for the three forks of the Flathead River. Every spring folks from around the world begin to arrive around May, to enjoy the mountains, valleys and rivers, eager to test their skill and to challenge the whitewater of the Middle Fork of the Flathead River.

Great Northern Whitewater runs a fleet of High side self-bailer rafts ranging from 12′ to 16′ in length. Rafts accommodate 6-10 people. Most of the trips are paddleboat guided. Oar-guided trips are also available.

Entrance fees to Glacier National Park and the nearly 400 National Park Sites across the country will be waived during National Park Week, April 21-29.

Everyone, specifically families, are encouraged to take advantage of the free entrance to get outside and explore or just “take in” the natural beauty of the park. Glacier National Park Superintendent Chas Cartwright said, “This annual celebration is a great opportunity to experience spring at the park and view the many birds that migrate to or through the park at this time of year.”

Currently, the Going-to-the-Sun Road is open to motorized traffic from the West Entrance to Lake McDonald Lodge and from the St. Mary Entrance to Rising Sun. Hiker/biker access is available for 5.5 miles from the Lake McDonald Gate to Avalanche while the road plow is working. This weekend, April 21-22, no restrictions are anticipated for hiker/biker access on the west side or east side of the Going-to-the-Sun Road. The Camas Road is open and the Two Medicine Road on the east side is currently open to Running Eagle Falls.

Weather conditions in the park can vary greatly from local valley locations, and road status can change depending on weather conditions and snow plowing activities. Park visitors are highly encouraged to plan ahead and visit the park’s website at http://www.nps.gov/glac/index.htm., or contact the park at 406-888-7800 for updated road conditions, plowing status and weather conditions. Visitors may also visit the park’s Facebook page to stay connected with the park.

Additional entrance fee-free dates during the year will be June 9 (Get Outdoors Day), September 29 (National Public Lands Day), and November 10 to 12 (Veterans Day weekend).

An annual Glacier National Park pass for unlimited access to the park for one year from time of purchase of the pass is available for $35. Other passes with America the Beautiful- The National Parks and Federal Recreational Lands Pass Program are also available. US citizens 62 years of age and older may purchase a lifetime pass for $10, and citizens with a permanent disability may obtain a free lifetime pass. An annual pass available for $80 allows free entrance to federally operated recreation sites across the county, including many National Park Service, US Forest Service, US Fish and Wildlife Service and Bureau of Land Management sites. For more information or to purchase a pass, please contact the park at 406-888-7800 . Any of the annual passes may also be obtained from the West Entrance Station during the weekend, 8 am to 4:30 p.m. or at the Headquarters Building, Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Just 5.5 miles east of Lake McDonald Lodge, the trail travels through a cedar and hemlock rain forest. Roughly at the half way point you will reach the highlight of the trail, a footbridge over Avalanche Creek that provides commanding views of the lower Avalanche Gorge. The humidity in the valley allows cedars to grow to heights of 100 feet and to diameters of 4 to 7 feet. Some of the trees in this area are more than 500 years old. The entire trail is on boardwalk or pavement and begins on GTTS Road at the Trail of the Cedars parking area.
Location: Lake McDonald
Distance: 0.7 mile loop
Duration: 30 minutes
Elevation Gain: None
Effort: Easy
Trailhead: adjacent to Avalanche Campground and Picnic Area
