The Peace Pole Project

May 4th, 2012 by teresa

Here at the Historic Tamarack Lodge and Cabins, we are proud to include ourselves in the Peace Pole Project.   A Peace Pole is a handcrafted monument displaying the message  ‘May Peace Prevail On Earth’ in a variety of different languages.

From its beginnings in 1955 Japan, Masahisa Goi dedicated his life to spreading the message conveyed on the peace poles and today there are tens of thousands of poles in more than 180 countries throughout the world.  There are peace poles located at the Pyramids of Giza, at the magnetic North Pole and at Hiroshima, Japan.

The peace pole at the Historic Tamarack Lodge and Cabins was inaugurated in September 2010 in recognition of the 100 year anniversary of Glacier National Park which is also celebrated as the Waterton-Glacier International Peace Park.

Snowmobiling at the Historic Tamarack Lodge and Cabins

February 13th, 2012 by teresa

Open year-round, your accommodation at the Historic Tamarack Lodge and Cabins provides the perfect location for snowmobile adventures.

Firstly, we know our trails, have up to the minute information on weather conditions and work closely with local outfitters to ensure you get great service and great discounts to go along with it!

Whether you are an expert looking for a fresh challenge, a total novice unsure which end of a sled is which, a couple taking a romantic break or you are travelling with your whole family in tow, let us help you plan your snowmobiling vacation.

Here are a few of our favorite trails for starters:

Start off really close to home.  Outside our back door is the Desert Mountain Trail. Known as one of the most spectacular trails in Northwest Montana (at the closest to our Glacier National Park Cabin Rentals!), the Desert Mountain trail allows access to the summit of Desert Mountain overlooking Glacier National Park, Hungry Horse Reservoir and the Great Bear Wilderness. From this trailhead you may also ride an ungroomed trail along the east shore of Hungry Horse Reservoir, great for wilderness scenery and hill climbing. About 35 miles.

Located on the North Fork of the Flathead River Drainage, the Canyon Creek trail accesses more than 80 miles of groomed trail and abundant mountain riding. The trailhead starts five miles north of Columbia Falls on F.S. road 316. The trail leads to Whitefish Mountain Resort on Big Mountain where you can take a break at the Summit House. Another option is to continue past Big Mountain to Upper Whitefish Lake or go to Kimmerly Basin, a great place for some snow play along the route.

For adventures a little farther afield, trailer out to the Olney Trail. Close to Whitefish and just off Hwy. 93, the Olney trail travels through open-field play terrain. The groomed trail connects to Upper Whitefish Lake trail and Stryker trail. This is one of the largest loops you can take in one day. The route winds up from Olney over Werner Peak at 7100 ft. This trail will also lead you to Whitefish Mountain Resort and down to the Canyon Creek trailhead in Columbia Falls.

Snowmobile trails are groomed from December 1 through April 15
